Holding Space For Yourself This Holiday Season

The holiday can bring many different emotions. For some, this season brings comfort and a sense of familiarity. For others, it brings changes, mixed feelings, or moments that feel heavier than expected. When you are living with MSA, caring for someone, have cared for someone in the past, or supporting a loved one, the holidays may look different than they once did. That is okay.

It is normal to experience a mix of emotions, including joy, stress, reflection, and sadness, this time of year. You might notice the season feels different than it used to. Plans may shift, routines may adjust, and that can bring up many emotions. Even with these changes, there can still be small moments that feel comforting.

If you are spending the holidays alone, small routines can bring comfort. A warm drink, calming music, a favorite show, or checking in with someone you trust can help the day feel more grounded. You deserve support and connection, no matter what your holiday looks like.

Here are a few gentle ideas that can help make the season feel manageable.

  • Keeping gathering smaller or shorter if  needed
  • Build in rest before, during and after activities
  • Simplify traditions to match your current comfort and energy
  • Communicate your needs with family or friends ahead of time
  • Choose what feels meaningful instead of what is expected
  • Create new routines that support your well-being
  • Say no without guilt when something feels overwhelming
  • Reach out if you feel disconnected or isolated

Connection can take many forms. It might be small conversations, sending a holiday card, or making a phone or video call. Joining a support group is another option. We encourage you to use MSA Connect, our dedicated online space, where you can find others who understand the unique challenges of this season and gain support, information, and a vital sense of belonging for those on a similar journey.

The season does not need to follow that same structure every year. It can be simplified, adjusted or reshaped based on what is manageable. The goal is to create a holiday that supports your daily routines and overall well-being.
