Local Recommendations

We asked our Boston locals for their recommendations for sightseeing, activities, and of course, good food.

Overview of Boston

Whenever I have visitors from out of town and the weather is nice, I always take them on a Duck Tour of Boston. It takes about 90 minutes and covers most of the city. It’s also fun and a little silly! For the less adventurous, you can go to View Boston at the top of the Prudential Center, get an amazing 360-degree view of the city, and grab lunch or dinner while you are at it.

While you are in the neighborhood of the Prudential Center, check out the old, original part of the Boston Public Library – the oldest free public library in the US. The building is impressive from the outside (enter on Dartmouth Street), and the interior is equally impressive, with magnificent stonework and a huge reading room featured in several films. Be sure not to miss the third floor because that is where the Sohn Singer Sargent murals are! There are several places inside the library where you can find a quick lunch, and there is also a lovely tea in the BPL Tea Room (reservations required)

The Freedom Trail is great for history buffs. It is a walking tour you can do on your own and covers such places as Paul Revere’s house, the USS Constitution, and the Old North Church of “one if by land, two if by sea” fame. For the less history-minded, a walk through the North End, the Italian section of Boston, will take you to fabulous restaurants (Mamma Maria’s is great for groups) or you can weigh in on the best place to find cannolis – Mike’s Pastry, Modern Pastry or Bova’s Bakery – there is a real rivalry!

For sports fans, go see the “green monster” at Fenway Park, which has been the home of the Boston Red Sox since 1912. Tours are available!

I must mention strolls through the MIT campus, which has incredible architecture, and Harvard Yard, which is both beautiful and historic. You can continue the Harvard tour by walking through Harvard Square, followed by lunch or dinner at either Harvest Restaurant or Henrietta’s Table.

IN BOSTON

The Boston Freedom trail brings you to historic stops throughout Boston. You’ll make your way over to Bunker Hill in Charlestown and then you can take a water taxi back into Downtown Boston. There are companies that host these tours (I love the Freedom Trail Running Tour) or you can follow the red bricks on your own.

Assembly Row in Somerville has shops and restaurants and a smaller version Lego Land. A couple hours at most needed here.

Boston Harbor Cruises: Be sure to check out Codzilla which is a speed boat that whips you around Boston Harbor.

Boston Harbor Islands: Ferry will take you out to one of these islands. Some have great walking/running paths and it’s a nice boat ride out. Not much other than a walk and enjoying the islands once there but a good way to spend a little time.

A tour of Fenway Park is highly recommended! After your tour, walk to Sweet Cheeks Q which is owned by Chef Tiffany Faison of Food Network fame. The biscuits here are a borderline religious experience.

The North End of Boston is “Little Italy” of Boston. There are so many amazing restaurants here and you can’t go wrong at any of them! Dessert should be had at Mike’s Pastry or Modern Pastry for some amazing Italian specialties like cannoli and the like.

The Seaport district has some new shops and restaurants and in the summer will likely have some pop-up stores, beer gardens, etc.

NORTH OF BOSTON

A day trip up to Portsmouth, New Hampshire would be a nice stop. Portsmouth has a great downtown area that is walkable with some amazing restaurants, coffee shops, breweries and more. There are some historical sites here and kayak tours are definitely recommended.

If you want a bit of a blast to the past, Hampton Beach in New Hampshire is about an hour from Boston. Hampton Beach is a beach full of massive waves for the kids and then has a boardwalk with arcades, candy shops, cheesy tee-shirt stores, fried seafood, etc. The people watching is amazing and it isn’t anything fancy for sure but for that “beachfront boardwalk” sort of feel it hits the mark.

Clam Box of Ipswich is an iconic location for some fried seafood, lobster rolls and more. While in Ipswich, check out Castle Hill on the Crane Estate.

SOUTH SHORE

If you want to spend a day outside the city, Island Creek Oysters can’t be beat. Fresh oysters and they do oyster farm tours, as well.

Plymouth is a bit of a ride from Boston but again a good day trip. There’s a replica of the Mayflower and Plimoth Patuxet is a historic site taking you back to colonial days.

Attractions

For a truly unique experience, head to the WNDR Museum. It is a hands-on, immersive visual experience for your senses. It is located in the heart of downtown, steps from the Boston Common and Downtown Crossing for shops and restaurants. Also, just a short walk to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market.

Local Eats

Ruka Resto Bar – Peruvian Sushi (Washington St, Financial District)
Mida – Italian (Massachusetts Ave, South End)
SRV – Italian (Columbus Ave, South End)
Eataly – Prudential Center, Buylston St, Back Bay (Terra is the fancier one)
Lolita Back Bay – Fun and funky Mexican (Dartmouth St, Back Bay)
Legal Seafood – has several locations, and the seafood is always fresh and yummy!

For the seafood lover and the best warm butter lobster roll in New England, head to Neptune Oyster in the historic North End. Amazing selection of fresh oysters, crudo and other raw bar favorites. It’s small, intimate setting so not easy to get seated for a party larger than four. They also do not take reservations, so if you’re planning on having lunch get there early, especially on a weekday, as people line up outside waiting for the doors to open at 11. It is absolutely worth the wait though and when your meal is done you can walk around the corner to Boston’s famous Mike’s Pastries, home of the cannoli.
